A few tidbits from Yuka Nagashima, moderator of the Industry Briefings 2 sessions:

Mike K: major satellite business models and their status. New business models: traditionally used to sell per frequency, now by throughput (a big change). Each frequency can now do more work. It takes about 3-8 years to validate the business model: huge investments, takes years to recoup and create revenue.

Greg R: Importance of managing customer expectations. His DSL broke down, kids were upset, they blamed it on provider. When he investigated, problem was in the house’s router. Comprehensive systems to oversee systems.

David S: unified communications tools: integrated systems like fax (large and gov entities), call forwarding, paging (school systems) other services. There’s a lot of variability, what is one killer app in each customer to each firm. People don’t use full set of services.

Nan C: Talked about an organization setting policy, guidelines for adopting ethernet as a service (service provider level). Integrating with satellite, service agreements, right now 10% of services are ethernet and growing. Opportunities exist.

Chris M: investment in software company that does backend integration, minimize risk in international wholesale providers, under-sea cable providers. Majority of invoices are mailed. Time to process invoices, and even if PDF it’s a scan. Big lag time, meaning long financial lag, especially problematic in international market (exchange rate margins) have additional risks. Solution to go direct from data to invoice, less errors from data sources.
